Importantly, the heating process does not produce harmless water vapor but an aerosol containing various chemicals.
E-Liquid Contents and Toxins
E-liquids typically contain propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavorings, and often nicotine. However, when heated, these liquids produce toxic substances. Studies have detected carcinogens like formaldehyde and acrolein, which can cause irreversible lung damage. Furthermore, heavy metals such as nickel, tin, lead, and cobalt have been found in both the liquids and the resulting aerosols, often originating from the device components themselves.
Nicotine and Cannabis-Specific Risks
Nicotine is highly addictive and particularly harmful to adolescent brain development, impairing cognitive function and intensifying stress and anxiety. Cannabis vape cartridges present unique dangers. Analysis of seized products has found extremely high THC concentrations (averaging 85%) and synthetic cannabinoids, posing a significant risk of cardiac toxicity. Moreover, the previously reported association with Vitamin E Acetate in THC vapes and related lung injuries remains a major health concern.
